The United States is situated almost entirely in the Western Hemisphere: the contiguous United States stretches from the Pacific Ocean on the west to the Atlantic Ocean on the east, with the Gulf of Mexico to the southeast; it is bordered by Canada on the north and Mexico on the south.

The United States consist of 50 states - 48 are called the "continental" states. Alaska (the largest state in area, separated from the contiguous United States by Canada) and Hawaii (an archipelago in the central Pacific, southwest of North America) became the 49th and 50th states of the union.

In addition to the states there exist several areas with a special status: Washington D.C. and the US territories of Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

In 1872, America’s first national park was established at Yellowstone. Another fifty-seven national parks now preserve the natural beauty and heritage of the nation.

America offers to divers thousands km of beautiful coastline with islands, natural marine parks, cliffs and coral reef in its southern waters of Gulf of Mexico.
